Where James Bond places in the biggest movie franchises

By Ninian Carter

October 11, 2021 - The James Bond franchise is Hollywood’s longest-running franchise and one of the world’s most financially successful, earning $7.4 billion at the global box office. However, this pales by comparison to the highest-grossing franchise, Marvel’s Cinematic Universe, which has earned a whopping $23.3 billion.

The James Bond movie franchise is one of the world’s most successful. With 25 official Eon Productions movies to date (plus two non-canon offerings), it has earned $7.4 billion dollars at the international box office (unadjusted for inflation).

But now, as Daniel Craig takes a bow and opens up the franchise to casting a new 007 star, the producers will be wondering how to modernise the franchise for a younger audience that cares about diversity and the treatment of women.

Bookmakers currently believe Tom Hardy (44) is the favourite to be the next Bond, followed by James Norton (36) and Regé-Jean Page (32).

Whoever wins the day, they are sure to be a very different Bond to the ones we’re used to. As M (played by Judi Dench) succinctly put it in the 1995 Pierce Brosnan actioner, Goldeneye, “You’re a sexist, misogynist dinosaur – a relic of the Cold War”.
