November 9, 1921: Benito Mussolini created the National Fascist Party, which ruled Italy from 1922-43. A “fascio” is a bundle of rods, symbolising strength through unity

November 10, 1871: “Dr Livingstone, I presume?”, enquired journalist Henry Stanley on finding missing Scottish explorer David Livingstone at Ujiji, in present day Tanzania

November 11, 1926: Route 66, one of America’s most famous roads, was established. It ran from Chicago to Los Angeles, a distance of 2,448 miles (3,940km) through eight states

November 12, 1981: The space shuttle Columbia was launched for the second time, becoming the first space vehicle to be used more than once. The shuttle programme ended in 2011

November 13, 2001: Kabul fell to Northern Alliance forces after the Taliban abandoned the Afghan capital. Twenty years on, the Taliban are back in power after U.S. and allied forces left
