William “Kirk” Shatner has successfully flown into space

By Ninian Carter

October 13, 2021 - William Shatner – Captain Kirk in the cult classic Star Trek – has boldly gone where no 90-year-old sci-fi actor has gone before, aboard Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin rocket. He is the oldest person ever to travel into space.

After nearly a lifetime playing Captain Kirk in the Star Trek television series and spin-off movies, actor William Shatner has “boldly gone where no man has gone before”.

Shatner was joined by three crew mates aboard the Blue Origin New Shepard NS-18 – Audrey Powers (Blue Origin’s vice president of missions and flight operations, and a former NASA flight controller), and Chris Boshuizen and Glen de Vries (two paying customers).

At 90 years old, he has become the oldest person to ever travel into space – fulfilling a lifelong ambition.

The rocket took off from West Texas on October 13, sending the crew on a 10 minute journey. It reached an altitude of 106km – just beyond the Kármán Line, the most widely recognised boundary of space.
