Ronaldo makes 178th appearance in Champions League

September 29, 2021 - Europe’s new UEFA Champions League season continues, as Cristiano Ronaldo has claimed yet another UEFA Champions League record, making his 178th appearance in Manchester United’s victory over Villarreal at Old Trafford.

Ronaldo, who rejoined Manchester United in the summer from Italian giants Juventus, scored an injury-time winner to secure an important three points in the group stage clash with Villarreal. The Portuguese talisman also holds Champions League goals record, with 136 strikes -- leading long-term rival Lionel Messi by 15 goals.

The 2021-22 UEFA Champions League is the 30th season of Europe’s primary club football tournament.

Chelsea are defending champions having defeated English Premier League rivals Manchester City in the 2021 final.

Real Madrid are the most successful club in European Cup history, with 13 titles, ahead of AC Milan (7), Bayern Munich (6) and Liverpool (6).

The UEFA Champions League is contested by the highest ranked teams of the strongest UEFA national associations. It is the top club competition in European football and one of the most prestigious tournaments in the world. The Champions League final is the most watched annual sporting event worldwide.
