By Chris Dinsdale

October 11, 2021 - The 125th Boston Marathon, the world’s oldest annual marathon, is the fourth race of six in the World Marathon Majors series in 2021.

The Boston Marathon started in 1897 with 15 runners. Delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic, it is usually held in April on Patriots’ Day, which commemorates the Battles of Lexington and Concord in 1775 at the start of the American War of Independence from Great Britain.

Ethiopian Lelisa Desisa, the reigning World Athletics men’s marathon champion, is targeting his third Boston title after victories in 2013 and 2015, while compatriot Yebrgual Melese, making her Boston debut, heads the women’s field, which includes nine lifetime bests of sub-2:22.

The World Marathon Majors comprises six races globally: London, Boston, Berlin, Chicago, New York, with Tokyo promoted to major status most recently, in 2013.

2021 World Marathon Majors:

Sep 26: Berlin
Oct 3: London
Oct 10: Chicago
Oct 11: Boston
Oct 17: Tokyo
Nov 7: New York
