Germany election – preliminary official result

By Duncan Mil

September 27, 2021 - Olaf Scholz’s centre-left Social Democratic Party (SPD) could reclaim Germany’s chancellery for the first time since 2005, according to preliminary official results. Still, the final results of the closely fought election remain uncertain.

The Federal Returning Officer announced the preliminary results of the election to the 20th German Bundestag on September 27, at 05:00GMT.

Federal Electoral Committee reports that estimated date for determining the final election result is Friday, October 15.

After 16 years in power, Chancellor Angela Merkel is not seeking re-election in Sunday’s federal election. But under the German constitution, Merkel will remain chancellor until a majority of Bundestag lawmakers elects a successor.
