September 26, 1871: The first U.S. patent for portland cement was issued, a boon to Hollywood where impressions of famous hands are recorded. It was first patented in England in 1824

September 27, 1996: Taliban militants captured Kabul after a rapid offensive through eastern Afghanistan. Former President Mohammad Najibullah was seized and executed

September 28, 2016: Shimon Peres, former Prime Minister and President of Israel, died at 93. He won the 1994 Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts to reach a peace deal with the Palestinians

September 29, 1971: Oman joined the Arab League. Founded with six members in March 1945, the Arab League currently has 22 members and six observer states

September 30, 1846: American dentist William Morton made the first public demonstration using ether as a surgical anaesthetic to painlessly extract an ulcerated tooth

October 2, 1836: Charles Darwin completed his five-year voyage exploring the southern oceans on HMS Beagle. The studies he made helped him formulate his theory of evolution
