Death toll nears 1,300 In Haiti after massive earthquake

August 16, 2021 - The death toll from a 7.2-magnitude earthquake that hit the Caribbean nation of Haiti on Saturday has climbed towards 1,300, with at least 5,700 people injured.

The country’s civil protection agency said 1,297 dead had been counted by Sunday, a day after the quake turned thousands of structures into rubble and set off frantic rescue efforts ahead of a potential deluge from an approaching storm.

Tropical Depression Grace is predicted to reach Haiti on Monday night. The civil protection agency said Haitians must expect strong winds, heavy rain, rough seas, landslides and flooding.
