August 29, 1896: The Chinese-American dish chop suey – meat and eggs cooked quickly with vegetables in a starch-thickened sauce – was invented in New York City

August 30, 2001: Over 300 million Europeans saw their new currency for the first time when the European Central Bank unveiled the official designs for euro notes and coins

August 31, 2016: Brazil’s President Dilma Rousseff was impeached and removed from office by the Senate on charges that she violated the nation’s budget laws

September 01, 2004: Chechen terrorists seized over 1,300 hostages at a school in the Russian town of Beslan. The siege ended tragically with at least 330 people, mostly children, killed

September 02, 1666: The Great Fire of London began in a bakery in Pudding Lane. The four-day inferno destroyed much of the city but, remarkably, claimed only a few lives
