August 22, 1901: The Cadillac Motor Company, America’s first luxury carmaker, was founded in Detroit. It was names after the French explorer who founded the city in 1701

August 23, 2020: Bayern Munich won the UEFA Champions League final for a sixth time, and became the first team to win every game in a single Champions League campaign

August 24, 2001: Researchers in Kenya revealed that Africa’s forest and savanna elephants are two different species, raising to three the number of living elephant species

August 25, 2020: Wild polio was eliminated in Africa, with Nigeria the last African country declared free from the disease. It is now found only in Afghanistan and Pakistan

August 26, 2016: The Yavuz Sultan Selim Bridge, the world’s tallest suspension bridge, was opened to traffic in Istanbul. It is the city’s third bridge across the Bosphorus

August 27, 1576: Venetian Renaissance master Titian, whose handling of colour and mastery of new oil techniques made him one of the greatest painters of the period, died

August 28, 2020: Chadwick Boseman, U.S. actor best known as Black Panther in the Marvel superhero franchise, died at age 43 after a four-year battle with colon cancer
