August 8, 1981: Swiss tennis star Roger Federer was born. The 20-time Grand Slam champion, whose achievements include a record eight Wimbledon titles, turns 40 today

August 9, 1942: Mahatma Gandhi launched his Quit India campaign, demanding an end to British rule in India. He was immediately arrested and imprisoned

August 10, 2020: Lebanon’s government resigned amid mounting anger over the huge explosion that devastated the port area of Beirut and left over 200 people dead

August 11, 1956: U.S. artist Jackson Pollock, who led the Abstract Expressionist movement and introduced the technique of pouring paint on to canvas, died in a car accident

August 12, 1883: The last quagga, distinguished from other zebras by its pattern of brown and white stripes on the front of the body and plain brown rear, died at a zoo in Amsterdam

August 13, 1521: Spanish conquistador Hernando Cortez captured the Aztec capital Tenochtitlan, the present-day Mexico City, following a three month siege

August 14, 1457: The Mainz Psalter was published. It contained the psalms and was the second major book printed with movable metal type, after the Gutenberg Bible
