Global spread of Covid-19 Delta variant

July 20, 2021 - The World Health Organisation says that coronavirus cases and deaths are climbing globally after a period of decline, spurred by the highly contagious Delta variant.

The Delta variant is exacting a grim toll on dozens of developing countries, where vaccination levels are insufficient to prevent a surge in cases from becoming a wave of deaths, according to the Financial Times.

As economies in Europe and the US that have successfully weakened the link between infections and deaths have started to reopen, poorer countries with low vaccination rates are in some cases entering their worst phase of the pandemic, the FT said.

Experts are saying Indonesia has become a new epicentre for the pandemic as outbreaks worsen across Southeast Asia. Meanwhile, some athletes have tested positive for Covid-19 at Tokyo’s Olympic Village, with the Games due to open Friday.
