By Chris Dinsdale

August 10, 2021 - August 19, 2021 - The Copa Libertadores, South America’s premier club competition, reaches the quarter-final stage. Teams from Brazil dominate the line-up with defending champions Palmeiras facing domestic rivals Sao Paulo, Flamengo clashing with Paraguay’s Olimpia, Atletico Mineiro up against four-time winners River Plate from Argentina, and Fluminense taking on Ecuador’s Barcelona SC.

CONMEBOL member associations include Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraquay, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela.

Teams from Argentina and Brazil are traditionally dominant in the tournament, sharing 45 of 61 titles between them since 1960.

Brazilian heavyweights Palmeiras beat rivals Santos in last season’s final to win the title for the second time.
