Storms cause flooding across Europe

By Phil Bainbridge

July 15, 2021 - More than 20 people have died and scores are missing after devastating floods followed heavy precipitation in Benelux and Germany, as slow-moving storms brought the region’s single-day heaviest rainfall since 1983.

The worst of the flooding has been in the German states of Rhineland-Palatinate and North Rhine-Westphalia, where homes and vehicles have been swept away as major rivers burst their banks. Up to 70 people are missing after houses collapsed in the village of Schuld. At least four people have died in neighbouring Belgium, while the Netherlands has also been badly hit.

A slow-moving low pressure system has set up across northern Europe and is expected to continue bringing record rainfall to parts of France, Belgium, Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Czech Republic and Italy.
