U.S. drug overdose deaths up nearly 30% in one year

July 15, 2021 - A record number of Americans died of drug overdoses last year, rising almost 30% to over 90,000 deaths, according to a new CDC report.

Drug overdose deaths in the United States rose by 29.4% in 2020, according to a new report by the CDC’s National Center for Health Statistics.

An estimated 93,331 drug overdose deaths were reported in 2020 up from 72,151 estimated fatalities the year before.

Overdose deaths from opioids rose 37% in 12 months, to 69,710, largely fuelled by synthetic opioids like fentanyl and semi-synthetic opioids such as prescription painkillers.
