July 5, 1946: The bikini, designed by former Renault engineer Louis Reard and named after the Pacific atoll where atom bombs were then being tested, was first modelled in Paris

July 6, 1971: Eminent jazz trumpeter Louis Armstrong died. His bands, the Hot Five and Hot Seven, made a revolutionary impact on jazz in the mid 1920s

July 7, 1591: The week-long festival of San Fermin, famous for the “encierro”, or running of the bulls, was established in the Spanish city of Pamplona

July 8, 2000: Venus Williams became the first black woman to win Wimbledon since 1957. She and her younger sister Serena have 12 Wimbledon singles titles between them
