June 15, 2006: The world’s largest marine sanctuary, supporting over 7,000 species, many of them unique to the region, was established in northwestern Hawaii

June 16, 1963: Soviet cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova became the first woman to be launched into space when she blasted off aboard the spacecraft Vostok 6
