Iron Dome defence system

By Duncan Mil

October 8, 2023 - “Iron Dome”, designed to intercept and destroy short-range rockets and artillery shells fired from distances of 4-70 kilometres, has been used extensively since the latest Hamas attack on Israel.

It’s fifty years since the Yom Kippur War, which began with a surprise attack on Israel by Egypt and Syria.

Now, Israel is under attack once again, this time from Hamas Palestinian militants, after a surprise attack on the morning of October 7.

Tensions had been rising in the Gaza Strip recently, but the belief was that neither Hamas nor Israel wanted an escalation.

That was until an intense barrage of rockets launched from the Gaza Strip – some reaching as far away as Jerusalem and Tel Aviv – and Palestinian fighters entered southern Israel by land, sea and air.

They have held Israeli towns under siege for hours, killing many people and taking away numbers of Israeli civilians and soldiers to hold as hostages and human shields in Gaza.
