May 23, 1785: Benjamin Franklin revealed he had invented bifocal spectacles, with lenses of two different thicknesses for viewing distant objects as well as near ones

May 24, 1941: Influential U.S. singer and songwriter Bob Dylan was born as Robert Zimmerman. His stage name was inspired by the poet Dylan Thomas. He is 80 today

May 25, 2020: Protests broke out across the U.S. after the death of a black man arrested in Minneapolis. George Floyd died as a police officer knelt on his neck for almost 9 minutes

May 26, 1923: The first Le Mans 24-hour race was run, on public roads around the French town. It has since evolved into the most famous endurance race in motor sport
