July 23, 2021 - August 8, 2021 - The 2020 summer Olympic Games, the Games of the XXXII Olympiad, take place in Tokyo, Japan.

Athens, the birthplace of the ancient Olympic Games hosted the first revival in the modern era, with 241 athletes from 14 nations contesting 43 events. To the great joy of the 100,000 spectators Greek athlete Spyridon Louis won the marathon, for which he received, like all first place winners, a silver medal, an olive branch and a diploma.

This is the second time that Japan, and specifically Tokyo, has hosted the Summer Olympic Games – the first being in 1964. Athens played host for a second time in 2004, with Paris and Los Angeles also having hosted two Summer Games. Only London has been a host city three times, in 1908, 1948, and 2012.
