Golden Globes winners 2021

By Duncan Mil

March 1, 2021 - Road drama “Nomadland” and mockumentary sequel “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm” took home big honors at Sunday night’s glitchy Golden Globes. Netflix prevailed with a commanding 42 nominations.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association awards the Golden Globes. HFPA is a non-profit journalistic organisation launched by several Los Angeles-based, foreign-born journalists in 1943. Their first awards were given out the following year in the hopes of winning foreign journalists the same access to studios, stars, and other Hollywood figures as their local American press peers.

For Oscar watchers, 65 per cent of the Globes’ “Best Picture” winners have gone on to become Oscar-winning movies since 1950.

This year, the HFPA made history by nominating three female directors, Chloé Zhao for “Nomadland,” Emerald Fennell for “Promising Young Woman”, and Regina King for “One Night in Miami.”

In the past 38 years, HFPA has nominated just five women directors -- Barbra Streisand (for 1983’s “Yentl” and 1991’s “The Prince of Tides”), Jane Campion (for 1993’s “The Piano”), Sofia Coppola (for 2003’s “Lost in Translation”) and Kathryn Bigelow (for 2010’s “The Hurt Locker” and 2012’s “Zero Dark Thirty”).
