Grand Egyptian Museum due to open

November 1, 2022 - A century after the discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb, the Grand Egyptian Museum is slated to open in Giza. It will showcase the full collection of 5,000 relics unearthed in the boy king’s tomb, including 2,000 artifacts displayed for the first time.

The Grand Egyptian Museum, GEM, as it’s called, is a signature project of the country’s government, a monumental undertaking begun 20 years ago that, because of of political instability and the Covid-19 pandemic, is many years behind schedule.

The 60,000-square-metre building has been built on a plot of nearly 500,000 square metres, about two kilometres from the Giza Pyramids plateau, according to The National.

The £889 million museum will have two exhibition halls devoted entirely to Tutankhamun, which will display, for the first time, nearly all of the more than 5,000 objects discovered in his tomb. The greatest attraction is Tutankhamun’s mask, one of the most valuable art objects worldwide.

The venue is slated to open this November.
