January 26, 2020: Basketball legend Kobe Bryant died in a helicopter crash with his 13-year-old daughter and seven others. The LA Lakers star, 41, was a five-time NBA champion

January 27, 1756: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born in Salzburg, Austria. A child prodigy, he went on to compose 41 symphonies and many of the world’s most popular operas

January 28, 1958: Danish company Lego patented bricks using a plastic (acrylonitrile butadiene styrene) to produce the versatile interlocking brick still in use today

January 29, 1886: German engineer Karl Benz patented the first successful petrol-driven motor car. It had three rubber-tyred wheels and travelled at 9.3mph

January 30, 2020: The WHO declared China’s coronavirus outbreak a public health emergency following confirmation of human-to-human transmission in other countries
