France to expel more than 200 foreign religious extremists

By Ninian Carter

October 19, 2020 - France is preparing to expel more than 200 foreigners on an extremist watch list after a teacher was beheaded by a Russian-born Islamist.

France is to expel 231 foreigners residing in France, whose details are held on a government watch list of suspected religious extremists.

The move follows the decapitation of a school history teacher on Oct 16, by an 18-year-old Chechen refugee living in France.

President Emmanuel Macron’s government has been under increasing pressure to take a tougher stance on foreigners seen as a security threat.

Of the total number of suspects to be expelled, 180 people are in prison, with 51 living freely in France – who are now to be arrested.

France has suffered a litany of extremist attacks in recent years that have killed hundreds of civilians and police.
