November 1, 2015: President Erdogan’s AKP party won a stunning victory in Turkey’s snap election, sweeping back into single-party rule five months after losing its majority in parliament

November 2, 2019: South Africa defeated England in the Rugby World Cup final in Yokohama, Japan, led by Siya Kolisi, the first black player to captain the Springboks

November 3, 1970: Salvador Allende was sworn in as President of Chile, becoming the first Marxist to be elected president of a liberal democracy in Latin America

November 4, 1960: British conservationist Dr Jane Goodall observed chimpanzees in Tanzania creating tools, the first ever observation of this behaviour by non-human animals

November 5, 1955: French artist Maurice Utrillo died. Noted for his picturesque cityscapes, many of his works depict the Montmartre district of Paris where he was born

November 6, 2005: Myanmar’s military government began moving all ministries from the historic city of Yangon (Rangoon) to the new, purpose-built capital of Nay Pyi Taw

November 7, 1916: Jeanette Rankin was elected to the House of Representatives, becoming the first female member of Congress. She represented the Republican party from Montana
