U.S. ELECTION 2020

Senate and House results

By Phil Bainbridge

November 7, 2020 - LAST UPDATED 16:40GMT: Democrat Vice President Joe Biden has defeated Donald Trump in the U.S. presidential election. Victory in Pennsylvania delivered 20 Electoral College votes, pushing him past the 270-vote threshold needed to take the White House. President Trump has vowed to file legal challenges.

However, while Democrats may be able to take the House, where they currently hold a majority, clinching the Senate will be harder. With just a third of the 100 Senate seats being contested, Democrats need at least 3 more seats to take control, although the Republicans are defending 23 seats while the Democrats only have to defend 12.

Biden’s agenda in office may rest on his ability to work with Congress. In the U.S. Senate, Democrats -- with the support of two Independents -- and the Republicans each hold 48 seats in the 100-member Senate. The balance of power will be decided in January when Georgia has double run-off elections for its two seats.

In the House of Representatives, Speaker Nancy Pelosi is on track to keep control but with a shrinking majority. Democrats lead with 211 to 197 seats with less than 30 seats to be declared.
