Kamala Harris brings prosecutor’s legacy to Biden ticket
August 12, 2020 - Kamala Harris is to be the first Black woman on a major party presidential ticket in U.S. history. In choosing Harris, Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden has signalled he is heeding the lessons of 2016. That presidential campaign saw the first decline of Black voter turnout in 20 years. It helped Republican President Donald Trump win the White House.
Biden announced the selection over text message and in a follow-up email to supporters: “Joe Biden here. Big news: I’ve chosen Kamala Harris as my running mate. Together, with you, we’re going to beat Trump.” The two will appear together in Wilmington, Delaware, on Wednesday.
Harris is expected to keep up attacks on President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence, just as she has for months as the frontrunner to be Biden’s running mate.
In recent days, Harris and Susan Rice, former national security adviser to President Barack Obama, had been mentioned as top contenders to become Biden’s running mate.
