VJ DAY 75

Victory over Japan WWII

By Jordi Bou

August 14, 2020 - 75th anniversary of VJ Day, marking the victory over Japan that brought an end to the Second World War. Japan surrendered to the Allies within days of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

The war in the Pacific, which finally ended on August 15, 1945, killed millions of people from the jungles of Burma and the beaches of Singapore and the Philippines, to the cities of China and Japan and the seas of the Pacific.

Japan has been heavily criticised for the brutality of its soldiers in the countries it annexed during the war – and especially for its treatment of civilians in China.

World War II, our planet’s deadliest conflict, officially came to a close on September 2, 1945, when Japan formally surrendered during a solemn ceremony aboard the U.S.S. Missouri in Tokyo Bay. Germany had signed an unconditional surrender document four months earlier, on May 7.
