Two-time champion rejoins Renault for 2021 season

By Chris Dinsdale

July 8, 2020 - Two-time world champion Fernando Alonso returns to the F1 starting grid in 2021 after rejoining Renault on a two-year contract.

In August, the Spaniard is set to return to the Indianapolis 500 in another bid to win the third and final leg of motor racing’s Triple Crown, to add to victories he has already secured at the Monaco Grand Prix and Le Mans 24 Hours race. British driver Graham Hill is the only driver to date who has achieved this feat.

The Indy500 is normally run in May, but like so many sporting events of 2020, the race was delayed by the coronavirus pandemic.

Acknowledged as one of the most accomplished drivers of his generation, Alonso won the Formula 1 World Championship with Renault in successive years in 2005-06 but despite a move to Ferrari his career never hit those heights again and he quit after four years with a desperately uncompetitive McLaren.
