India’s Covid-19 cases top 600,000

By Jordi Bou

July 2, 2020 - The number of coronavirus cases in India has risen above 600,000, with around 18,000 deaths. The country has the fourth-highest number of Covid infections in the world, behind the U.S., Brazil and Russia.

India’s virus tally stood at 604,641 infections, with 100,000 of those infections reported in the past four days.

India’s Health Ministry said the death toll from the virus was now 17,834 people.

To contain the virus, the government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in late March imposed a strict nationwide lockdown, which halted much of the country’s economic activity.

The country is coming out of those lockdown measures, but a jump in daily new cases in recent weeks forced several state authorities to reinstate some restrictions.

The western state of Maharashtra, home to the country’s financial capital, Mumbai, accounts for more than a fifth of total infections in the country and nearly half of the deaths.

Countries with the most Covid-19 cases are the United States (with more than 2.6 million); Brazil (more than 1.4 million); Russia (660,231); India (604,641); and the United Kingdom (314,992).
