Messi joins exclusive 700-club
July 1, 2020 - Barcelona star Lionel Messi has become just the seventh player to score 700 career goals, reaching the milestone with an impressive chipped penalty in Barcelona’s La Liga clash against Atletico Madrid.
The diminutive Argentinian magician has joined his great rival Cristiano Ronaldo in the 700-club. Ronaldo achieved the feat in 2019 with a strike for Portugal in a Euro 2020 qualifier against Ukraine, but both forwards still have some way to go to overhaul the all-time record held by Czech-Austrian player Josef Bican.
Messi made his competitive debut for Barcelona in 2004, and has scored more than 40 goals for club and country in each of the past 11 calendar years.
He heads an illustrious list of goalscorers for Barcelona, including Cesar Rodriguez, Laszlo Kubala and strike-partner Luis Suarez. His 630 goals for his beloved Nou Camp club surpass the efforts of his closest compatriots combined.
