June 01, 1215: The city of Zhongdu (now Beijing), ruled by the Jurchen Emperor Xuanzong of Jin, was captured by the Mongols under Genghis Khan

June 2, 2014: King Juan Carlos of Spain, who came to the throne after the Franco dictatorship, announced his abdication after 39 years. He was succeeded by his son, Felipe

June 3, 1965: Major Ed White made the first spacewalk by a U.S. astronaut, an experience he enjoyed so much that he had to be ordered back into the Gemini 4 spacecraft

June 4, 1896: Henry Ford test drove his first car, the quadricycle, in Detroit. The vehicle had a simple frame fitted with a gas-powered engine and four bicycle wheels

June 5, 1975: British citizens voted by a 2-1 majority to stay in the Common Market in the first ever national referendum to be held throughout the United Kingdom

June 6, 1933: The first drive-in cinema opened in the U.S., with space for 500 cars. Their popularity peaked in the 1950s and 60s, with 4,000 drive-ins across the country
