Fake window set to light up gloomy rooms

By Ninian Carter

May 20, 2020 - Samsung Electronics is sponsoring the development of a window-shaped lighting device that produces artificial sunlight.

The "SunnyFive" can be hung on a home's wall, essentially a fake window, allowing the occupant to enjoy the full spectrum of light produced by the sun’s natural passage through the sky during the day – the angle of light able to mimic scenarios such as sunrise and sunset.

The device would be ideal for poorly lit apartments or bedrooms and bathrooms with no window.

A companion smartphone app allows users to tweak colour temperature, brightness and angle of simulated sunlight, as well as offering an alarm clock function.

The light will help people synthesise vitamin D while indoors without causing sunburn or skin aging. It could also benefit people suffering from Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD).
