New York swamped with coronavirus cases

By Ninian Carter

March 26, 2020 - With coronavirus cases multiplying rapidly, the United States could overtake Europe as the new epicentre of the coronavirus pandemic, according to the World Health Organisation.

Cases of coronavirus in New York are escalating at an alarming rate, likened to "a bullet train" by its governor Andrew Cuomo, with known cases now over 33,000 (and well over 300 deaths) – amounting to more than half of all U.S. cases.

The recent U.S. upsurge in new cases, which is expected to continue, is the result of more state and private labs testing for the virus after weeks of delays and test kit shortages.

New York State, home to the most populous city in America (8.6 million people), has been testing residents especially thoroughly, disclosing more than 7,400 new cases on Wednesday, March 25 alone.
