Sporting calendar decimated by pandemic

By Chris Dinsdale

March 23, 2020 - As the coronavirus pandemic enforces a global lockdown, the world’s most iconic sporting fixtures have fallen victim, with seasons suspended and tournaments cancelled or postponed, including the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics, the UEFA European Championships, multiple Formula 1 races, the U.S. Masters golf and the French Open tennis at Roland Garros.

The International Olympic Committee and Tokyo 2020 organisers have agreed to postpone the Olympic Games in Japan for one year after coming under mounting pressure to decide how best to move forward.

The IOC set a deadline for the end of April to reach a decision but as countries including Australia and Canada announced they were withdrawing their teams the postponement became inevitable.
