How the coronavirus spread in countries around the world
March 20, 2020 - The new coronavirus which causes an illness known as COVID-19 has spread to more than 150 countries and territories since it was first identified in the Chinese city of Wuhan in December.
The Chinese government imposed a lockdown in Wuhan and many other cities in central Hubei province in late January, but cases of the virus had already been exported to other regions of China and to other countries.
The World Health Organisation declared the coronavirus outbreak a pandemic on March 11 due to its rapid and sustained global spread and the severity of the illness the virus causes.
As of March 18, more than 245,000 cases of the virus had been reported across the world and more than 10,000 people had died.
