Daily new coronavirus cases

By Duncan Mil

March 12, 2020 - Italy, Iran and Spain now account for more than half (55.6%) of all daily new cases of the novel coronavirus. China, where the virus originated, is seeing a steady drop in numbers.

In Spain, new cases have increased exponentially over the past few days, making it the most severely affected European country after Italy.

On Thursday, U.S. President Donald Trump announced sweeping travel restrictions to curb the spread of coronavirus. The 30-day travel ban on flights from Europe order will apply to citizens of 26 European countries but exclude Ireland and the United Kingdom as well as American citizens. The ban takes effect from midnight on Friday.

Trump said he acted because the European Union had failed to take adequate measures to halt the spread of coronavirus.

In a statement, European Union leaders Charles Michel and Ursula von der Leyen said that the outbreak is a “global crisis, not limited to any continent and it requires cooperation rather than unilateral action.”

Spain’s top division La Liga soccer league has become the latest sports association to cancel games in a bid to stem the spread of the virus.
