Global coronavirus cases hit 20,000, over 400 deaths

February 4, 2020 - The viral outbreak that began in the Chinese city of Wuhan has killed more than 400 people and infected more than 20,000 worldwide. The vast majority of cases are in mainland China but the virus has spread to more than 25 other countries and territories.

Chinese health officials confirmed the number of fatalities has reached 425, with over 20,400 people infected nationwide. Hong Kong has also reported a virus death, bringing the total outside mainland China to two.

Most of the deaths in China have been in central Hubei province, where illnesses from the new type of coronavirus, named 2019-nCoV, were first detected in December.

More than 200 cases of the virus have been identified outside of mainland China.
