Kenin and Muguruza upset odds in Melbourne

By Chris Dinsdale

February 1, 2020 - Sofia Kenin of the United States and Garbine Muguruza from Spain contest the women’s singles final at the Australian Open in Melbourne.

Emerging star Sofia Kenin, 21, is targeting a first major title at the Australian Open after vanquishing home favourite Ashleigh Barty. The American enjoyed a breakthrough season in 2019, winning her first three WTA titles at Hobart, Mallorca and Guangzhou.

In contrast, Garbine Muguruza is appearing in her first Grand Slam final since her Wimbledon victory in 2017. The two-time major champion, who also secured the Roland Garros title in 2016, tumbled down the rankings after poor seasons in 2018-19 and could become just the third unseeded woman to claim the title at Melbourne Park.

The pair have met only once before, with Muguruza sealing a three-set victory in Beijing in 2019.
