China virus cases surge

January 31, 2020 - The ever increasing spread of a new viral disease that began in China is causing mounting global concern as numbers of infections and the death toll rise.

The first illnesses were detected in the city of Wuhan in December.

China’s increasingly drastic containment efforts began with the suspension of plane, train and bus links to Wuhan, a city of 11 million people. That lockdown has expanded to encompass multiple cities and more than 50 million people in the most far-reaching disease-control measures ever imposed.

There have been more than 60 confirmed cases outside China, including the U.S., Australia, France and Germany.
