Disney+ streaming service to launch earlier than expected

By Ninian Carter

January 21, 2020 - New streaming service Disney+ is to launch on March 24 in the UK, Ireland, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Austria and Switzerland – a week earlier than originally planned. It will be priced at €6.99/£5.99 per month.

Disney+ will be competitively priced at €6.99/£5.99 per month or €69.99/£59.99 if paid annually – keeping it in line with rival operators such as Amazon Prime, Netflix and lately Apple TV+.

Disney+ launched in North America in November 2019, where it became the most downloaded app, and the Netherlands where the platform was beta tested.

Disney+ will become available in Belgium, Portugal and Nordic countries in the summer of 2020.

It is believed the revised earlier launch date is an attempt by Disney to hamper widespread piracy of “The Mandalorian”, the channel’s first Star Wars live action show and the reason many viewers signed up to the service.

Disney has confirmed that the new service will replace the DisneyLife streaming channel, available in the UK and Ireland since 2015.
