UK government gives green light to HS2

February 11, 2020 - Britain’s government has given the green light to HS2, Europe’s largest infrastructure project, despite concerns that the high-speed rail link is billions of pounds over budget.

A leaked report suggests HS2 could cost almost double the £56 billion ($73 billion) predicted in 2015, according to the BBC.

Some £8 billion ($10.4 billion) has already been spent on the project, which will connect London, the Midlands and northern England using trains capable of travelling at 250mph (400km/h).

The first phase of the project, between London and Birmingham, is due to open by 2031, with the second phase to Leeds and Manchester expected to be completed by 2040.
