Golden Globes winners 2019

By Duncan Mil

January 6, 2020 - Joaquin Phoenix took the Golden Globe for best actor for playing mentally troubled comedian Arthur Fleck as he becomes the fabled title super-villain in director Todd Phillips “Joker.”

The Golden Globe for best picture, musical or comedy goes to “Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood,” directed by Quentin Tarantino.

Taron Egerton soared past other stars to win the Globe for best actor in a musical or comedy for playing Elton John in “Rocketman,” while Sam Mendes won the Globe for best director of a film for his World War I epic “1917.”

The Golden Globes are awarded by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. HEPA is a non-profit journalistic organisation, launched by several Los Angeles-based, foreign-born journalists in 1943. Their first awards were given out the following year in the hopes of winning foreign journalists the same access to studios, stars, and other Hollywood figures as their local, American press peers.

For Oscar watchers, the Globes’ leading actor and actress awards for film dramas have tended to line up with Academy Award winners by between 70 and 90 per cent over the past two decades.
