Apple sets sights on 2022 release of first AR headset

By Ninian Carter

November 13, 2019 - Apple could release an augmented reality and virtual reality combination headset in 2022, followed a year later by sleeker augmented reality glasses.

Apple has long been rumoured to be experimenting with augmented reality (AR) technology, with many observers seeing AR and virtual reality (VR) as the next big thing, especially as smartphone sales begin to plateau.

In 2018, Apple upped the ante when it acquired Akonia Holographics and hired a former Microsoft HoloLens designer, and now, according to insiders citing internal presentations made at Apple’s headquarters, the rumoured release date has been pushed back from 2020 to 2022 – due to more time being required to develope hardware and software.

The prototyope headset, codenamed N301, supposedly resembles a slimmer version of the recently released Oculus Quest VR unit. It is said to feature both AR and VR capabilities, use external cameras to map a user’s surroundings, and has a high-resolution display to show information and blend virtual objects with the real world.

The tech behemoth is hoping to have developer kits ready for 2021, in the hopes of bringing onboard third party developers, likely weighted towards the gaming sector.
