Streaming services throw cash at content

By Ninian Carter

November 12, 2019 - Online video subscription services are spending billions of dollars on original content to take on Netflix, but not all are likely to survive.

Netflix will spend two-thirds more on content this year than movie theatre box office receipts thus far in 2019. The streaming industry requires enormous financial investment to create original content, but deep pockets do not guarantee success.

The latest player in this hard-fought market is Disney+, which launches in some territories on November 12, expanding around the world in 2020. By this time, there will be a plethora of streaming services fighting for our attention, resulting in a vast spending spree in excess of $35 billion.

Six major players are going head-to-head in a battle to usurp Netflix, but not all of them can survive.
