How Twitter reshaped the U.S. presidency

By Ninian Carter

November 4, 2019 - Since the day of his inauguration as president, Donald Trump
has posted a stream of more than 11,000 tweets over 33 months

Twitter is perhaps Donald Trump’s favourite political tool, helping him win the 2016 U.S. presidential election.

His first tweet as president on Inauguration Day, January 20, 2017, said, “It all begins today! I will see you at 11:00 A.M. for the swearing-in. THE MOVEMENT CONTINUES – THE WORK BEGINS!”

Since then, Trump has posted a near-constant stream of around 11,400 tweets over 33 months, consisting of personal attacks, outrage and bravado.

Early on in his presidency, top aides tried and failed to restrain his Twitter blasts, even considering asking the social media giant to impose a 15-minute delay on his messages.

Of his streams of consciousness thus far, 5,889 are diatribes against at least 630 people and things; 2,026 are in praise of himself; 1,308 attack news organisations; 570 attack immigrants and 132 praise dictators.

(Data covers 11,390 presidential tweets made from Jan 20, 2017 to Oct 15, 2019.)
