England and South Africa battle for Rugby World Cup final glory

By Chris Dinsdale

November 2, 2019 - England and South Africa contest the Rugby World Cup final at the International Stadium Yokohama in Japan, with the winner crowned World Champion. The match is a repeat of the 2007 final, when the Springboks lifted the Webb Ellis trophy after a tense 15-6 victory.

England play their fourth World Cup final after comfortable victories over Tonga, the United States and Argentina secured top spot in the pool stage. Superb victories over Australia and defending champions New Zealand, which ended the All Blacks’ 18-match World Cup winning streak, followed. Captained by kicking sensation Owen Farrell and coached by Eddie Jones, England have grown in resilience throughout the tournament as they bid to secure their second World crown.

South Africa started the tournament with defeat against New Zealand but bounced back with defiant victories over Namibia, Italy and Canada. The Springboks then powered into their third World Cup final by beating host nation Japan in the quarter-finals and securing a narrow 76th minute semi-final victory over Wales. Coached by Rassie Erasmus and inspired by top scorer Handre Pollard, South Africa will relish the challenge of curtailing a buoyant England.
