UK truck death victims

October 24, 2019 - A number of Vietnamese citizens are thought to be among the 39 people found dead in a truck at an industrial park near London. The driver, from Northern Ireland, has been charged with manslaughter.

Essex Police reported that they were called to Waterglade Industrial Park in Eastern Avenue shortly before 1.40 am on Wednesday, October 23 by the East of England Ambulance Service following reports that 39 people had been found dead in a refrigerated trailer.

The tractor unit of the lorry entered Britain via Holyhead on Sunday, October 20, having travelled over from Dublin. The lorry then collected the trailer, which had travelled from Zeebrugge, at the port of Purfleet at around 12:30 am on October 23. The cab and trailer left the port shortly after 1.05 am.

The deceased included 31 men and eight women. Police initially thought they were Chinese nationals but many are now thought to be Vietnamese. The lorry driver, a 25-year-old from Northern Ireland, was arrested and subsequently charged with manslaughter.
