Record-breaking Biles set for big finish

By Chris Dinsdale

October 12, 2019 - October 13, 2019 - The World Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Stuttgart, Germany, conclude with the individual apparatus finals. U.S. gymnast Simone Biles, already the Championships’ most decorated female competitor, could surpass the all-time record for any gymnast, held by Vitaly Scherbo of Belarus since 1996.

Biles claimed her 21st World Championship medal when she won gold in the team event for USA to overhaul Russia’s Svetlana Khorkina in the women’s medal standings. She then added another gold in the women’s Individual all-around to lie just one medal behind Scherbo’s tally.

Over the weekend she will compete in each of the women’s four apparatus finals -- vault, uneven bars, floor and balance beam.

The 49th World Artistic Gymnastics Championships are taking place at the Hanns-Martin-Schleyer-Halle indoor arena in Stuttgart.
