Taiwan bridge collapses onto fishing boats

By Ninian Carter

October 1, 2019 - A steel arch bridge over a bay in north-eastern Taiwan has collapsed, crashing onto fishing boats berthed in the harbour below.

The 18-metre-high Nanfangao Bridge, a well known tourist attraction in the small fishing town of Suao, fell into the harbour at 9:30am (local time), on October 1, while a fuel truck was driving over it.

Amateur footage posted on social media shows a large truck almost getting across the bridge before tumbling backwards as the bridge crashes onto at least three fishing boats berthed beneath it.

More than 60 army and naval personnel are involved in the search for victims and survivors.
